我并不是一生下来就渴望着自由，因为我生下来就是自由的，我以我能知道的各种方式享受着自由：我在我母亲那个小房子周围自由地奔跑，我在穿过我村庄的清清的小河里自由地游泳，我在星光下自由地烤玉米，我骑在牛背上自由地歌唱。只要我听我父亲的话并遵守部落的风俗习惯，人间和天上的律条都不会找我的麻烦。

只有当我开始知道我童年的自由之梦其实是幻想的时候，我才发现，作为一个年轻人，我的自由已经被剥夺，因此，我开始渴望自由。开始，作为一个学生，我仅仅是要我自己的自由：晚上能待在户外的自由，想读什么书就读什么书的自由，想去哪里就去哪里的自由，这些都是一些暂时的自由。后来，作为约翰内斯堡市的一个年轻人，我渴望得到基本的、有尊严的自由：发挥自己潜力的自由，维持生计的自由，结婚的自由和拥有家庭的自由，这些都是在遵纪守法的生活中不受束缚的自由。

但是，后来我慢慢地发现，不仅我没有自由，我的兄弟姐妹也没有自由。我发现，不仅我的自由被剥夺，像我一样的每个人的自由都被剥夺了。正是在这个时候，我加入了非洲人国民大会；就是在这个时候，我对自己自由的渴望转变成了对人民自由的更大的渴望。正是这种更大的渴望，即为人民争取尊严和有尊严地生活的自由，才使我的生活充满了活力。因此，我从一个胆怯的青年变成了一个勇敢的青年，从一个遵纪守法的律师变成了一个“罪犯”，从一个热爱家庭的丈夫转变成了一个没有家的人，从一个热爱生活的人转变成了一个“修道士”。我并不比别人道德高尚和富有自我牺牲精神，但是，我发现在我知道我的人民不自由的时候，我甚至不能享受我被允许享受的最起码、最有限的自由。自由是看不见摸不着的，我的人民任何一个人身上戴着枷锁就等于所有人身上都戴着枷锁，而我的人民身上都戴着枷锁也就等于我的身上也戴着枷锁。

正是在那些漫长而寂寞的岁月里，我对我自己的自由的渴望才变成了我对所有的、不论黑人或白人的自由的渴望。我同时也知道，正像被压迫...

作为一个领导人，我总是遵循我起初在王宫看到的被摄政王演示过的原则。我总是努力倾听参加讨论的每一个人发表的意见，然后才发表自己的意见。通常情况下，我自己的意见仅仅是我在讨论中听到的一种共同认识。我总是记着摄政王的至理名言。“一个领导，”他说，“就像一个牧羊人。他站在羊群后面，让最敏捷、最聪明的羊走在前面，而其他羊则紧随其后，不要指望从羊群后面对它们发号施令。”

那时候，我在社会方面比政治方面更超前。在我还没有考虑反对白人的政治制度的时候，就作好了反对我们自己人民的社会制度的准备。具有讽刺意义的是，这间接地也是摄政王自己的过失，因为正是他出钱让我们接受的教育才使我们背叛这种传统的社会制度。

但是，我太年轻、太急躁，没有看到耐心等待的好处，一味认为逃走似乎是唯一的办法。

但是，约翰内斯堡的繁荣让我如此激动，我感觉仿佛自己那天晚上是在漂亮的羽毛褥垫上睡的觉。希望似乎是无限的，此时的我就像是经过长长的跋涉到达了终点。但事实上，这只是在更长更长的旅途中迈出的第一步，它将以我当时没有想象到的方式继续考验我。

帮助穷人是没有什么好说的，但是，帮助穷人常常是真实友情的孵化器。当有钱的时候，许多人都会向你表示友好，但是，当你贫穷的时候，则很少有人与你交往。如果财富是一块吸铁石，那么贫穷就是一个排斥器。

搞恋爱不像搞政治，小心谨慎通常不是好事。我既没有足够的信心去想我能够成功，也没有足够的勇气去忍受万一不成功而获得的痛苦。

因为没有语言就无法与人们交流，也就谈不上理解他们；没有语言，就不能共享他们的希望和理想，也不能掌握他们的历史、欣赏他们的诗词和歌曲。我又一次认识到，我们不是讲不同语言的不同的人，我们是讲不同语言的同一种人。

国民党的胜利起源于南非白人统治被英国人推翻。英语作为一种官方语言仅次于南非荷兰语。国民党的口号包藏了他们的使命：“我们自己的人民，我们自己的语言，我们自己的土地。”按照南...

一个人蹲过监狱后，他对生活中的小事情就会很感激：愿意什么时候散步就去散散步，走进商店买份报纸，或讲话或保持沉默。其实，都是些自己说了算的简单行动。

我仍然感觉到自己的大脑和内心之间存在着内在的冲突。我的心告诉我，我是一个泰姆布人，我被抚养成人，并被送进学校读书，这样我就在维护王权中起到了特别的作用。难道我对去世的先人没有感激之情？难道我对使我得到摄政王的关爱的我的父亲没有感激之情？难道我对像亲生父亲一样关爱我的摄政王本人没有感激之情？但是我的大脑却告诉我，按照自己的愿望计划自己的未来，选择自己的生活是每一个人的权利。难道不允许我做出自己的选择吗？

自从统计结果明确显示将由非洲人国民大会组建政府的那一刻起，我就把呼吁和解、包扎这个国家的伤口、加强信任和信心作为自己的使命。我知道，许多人，特别是在人数上占少数的白人、有色人和印度人，都正在对前途感到忧虑，我希望他们放心。我反复提醒大家，解放斗争并不是一种反对任何一个团体或种族的战斗，而是反对一种压迫制度的斗争。我利用一切机会表明，全南非人现在必须团结起来，我们是一个国家、一个民族、一样的人民，我们要携手并肩走向未来。

显然，对任何一个自由团体的镇压都是对所有自由团体的镇压。在这次会上，奥利佛说了一句预言性的话：“今天镇压的是共产党，明天将会是我们的商会、我们的南非印度人大会我们的非洲人民组织和我们的非洲人国民大会。”
